Laura F. (Miskell) Hayman, 100
Laura F. (Miskell) Hayman, 100, passed peacefully at her home in South Dartmouth on March 8, 2017.
She was born on July 26, 1916 in the historical home of her grandfather, Thomas Glennon, on County Street in New Bedford. There she spent her early childhood. Later her family moved to Falmouth Heights, where she enjoyed the beach, golf, ice skating, horseback riding, and watching the college baseball summer league games.
As a young child, she attended a Catholic girls' boarding school on the Cape. Upon graduation, she enrolled and graduated from LaBaron Hairdressing Academy in Providence, Rhode Island.
In 1947, she married Bertram T. Hayman and moved to South Dartmouth where they raised two children, Jeanne and Christie. She was an outstanding mother. Laura became an active member of the community as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Christian Fellowship, parent teacher association, and was the chairman of the Heart Fund.
In Laura’s later years, some of her happiest moments were caring for her loving granddaughter, Kimberly. They would take walks, play games, and bake brownies. Laura enjoyed reading, swimming at Anthony’s Beach, and had a great passion for the Boston Red Sox. She also had a great love for ice cream, and she could often be found with her son at Salvador’s in South Dartmouth.
Laura is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Hayman-Steen and her husband Edward of Canton; her son, Christie Hayman of South Dartmouth; a granddaughter, Kimberly of Canton; a step-daughter; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bertram T. Hayman; her parents, Joseph B. and Mary L. (Glennon) Miskell; and her brother, Joseph “Bud” Miskell and his wife Betty.
Our mother will be remembered for her strong spirit, heart of gold and kindness to all, especially her caregivers. Her memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
Funeral services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Compassionate Care Hospice, 174 Dean Street, Suite B, Taunton, MA 02780. For online condolence book, visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
