Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church UCC is trying something new to help its community.

The Blessing Box is a self-serve, no-questions-asked box stocked with emergency meals that are available around the clock. Parishioners set up the mini-food pantry in the church’s front yard.

Stocked with three or four meals at a time, community members are encouraged to take what they need and leave what they can, preferably nutrition-packed canned goods like soups, pastas, and tuna.

The project was inspired by an NPR piece, which delved into similar projects set up in Oklahoma, Indiana, Kentucky, Florida, and Minnesota. The first such pantry started in northwest Arkansas, according to the NPR article.

Smith Mills Church is located at 11 Anderson Way. Questions can be directed to Joyce Andersen at (508) 636-3028.
