Opinion: Seeking information pertaining to Dartmouth ancestor

May 6, 2024

To the editor:

My name is Jasper Wilson, 10. I have been doing family history research with my grand dad and you might find this interesting.

I am descended from Mary Cooke, who is my 11x great grandmother. She was born January 12, 1657 in Stanhope, Co Durham, England and she died in Dartmouth, Massachusetts in 1694. She had one child to John Fetherstone in 1684.

Her father, John Cooke, was born in 1605 in Holland and died in Dartmouth on November 23, 1695, which is a year after his daughter. He was married to Sarah Warren. I think John Cooke might have been, at the age of 15, one of the original passengers on the Mayflower — but I don’t want to jump to conclusions.

I found out from the internet that the Cookes were one of the 10 original families that settled in Dartmouth, but we don’t know a lot about her history. I was hoping that you or any of your readers might have any information about her.

Those interested in contacting me can reach my grand dad’s email at bobchessbruce@gmail.com or by mail:
