Nov 27, 2017

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will host an afternoon liteature and music series on December 10, 2 p.m.

The event will include a performance by opera singer Yohji Cantar Daquio, and and author talk featuring four local authors. It will be held in Room 153 at the main campus's Center for Visual and Performing Arts building.

Daquio is currently a freshman at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and performs in musicals, operas, and in vocal recitals and competition.

Guest speakers will include Jonathan Brickman, James E. Marlow, Laurie Robertson-Lorant and Brian Glyn Williams.

Marlow is a forty-year English professor at UMass Dartmouth, and has published books and arties on the works of Dickens, the Victorian period and semiotics. His latest book is Once We Were Sioux: Growing Up Dakotan.

Dr. Robertson-Lorant is a teacher and writer whose works include books and papers on Herman Melville. She is the author of Melville: A Biography and The Man Who Lived Among the Cannibals: Poems in the Voice of Herman Melville.

Dr. Williams teaches Islamic history at UMass Dartmouth. He has traveled extensively in Afghanistan tracking suicide bombers for the CIA’s Counter-Terrorism Center and the U.S. Army. He is the author of Counter Jihad, The Last Warlord, Inferno in Chechnya, Afghanistan Declassified and Predators.

Brickman’s career spans more than 50 years in newspapers, from small weekly publications to a Wall Street financial journal. He is the author of The Last Deadline, a story of journalist battles of truth and power. In his retirement, he dabbles in playwriting, and last fall, his play Trumpeting in Shakespeare appeared off Broadway.

A questions-and-answers session and book signing will follow the talk. Light refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored by the Claire T. Carney Library Associates.
