The South Coast Children’s Theatre’s upcoming production of Mary Poppins features plenty of Dartmouth talent, including the famed nanny herself.

Fourteen-year-old Dartmouth Middle School student Katherine Charrier will take on the role of Mary Poppins for the show. It’s a role the six-year member of the theater group is honored to be in, but it did require some extra practice to nail down.

“It was kind of a challenge but it’s super cool that you get to put on a British accent,” she said, explaining that she had taken a workshop in British and Cockney accents through the program.

It’s all to prepare for her role as Poppins, a character she’s excited to play owing to her magic and personality.

“She’s quirky in all her special ways,” Charrier said. “She’s very magical and it’s super fun.”

Charrier is not the only Dartmouth performer in the show. Sydney Hart, 9, plays Jane in the show. It’s her first year with the theater group. She joined after hearing about it after performing in Elf Jr. at Dartmouth High last year. But she’s excited to take on her first role as a devious child.

“I kind of like being a fresh child,” Hart said. “It’s so much fun, and you get to talk in a different accent.”

Robert Sioch plays John Northbrook and the tapping sweeper. The 12-year-old is used to playing characters closer to his own age, but is excited to be performing an older role for a change.

“I like that I get to be in a more mature role,” Sioch said.

Sarah Lawrence, the show’s co-director, said Mary Poppins was chosen this year to bring more magic to the group’s yearly productions and to top off last year’s performance of Seussical the Musical.

Performances are scheduled for May 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. An afternoon show is on May 12 at 1 p.m. Performances are at Keith Middle School, 225 Hathaway Blvd in New Bedford. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.
