While sharks are not Amya Moura’s favorite creatures, she donned a shark fin hat and danced to the Little Sharks nursery rhyme with friends Gianna Pacheco and Kianna Viegas.

It was all part of Potter Elementary School’s fifth grade lip sync competition, held on June 18. More than two dozen groups of fifth graders took part in acts covering everything from classic rock to songs from television shows, YouTube, and cartoons.

Asher Guerreiro worked together with his friends Will Gibson and Colin Leary to put together a mash-up centered around Jump on It. Not used to being up on stage, he was a bit nervous but as he was waiting for dismissal several people passed him in the halls and told him he was the best of the bunch.

“It was awesome being [on stage,]” he added.

Students got creative with their songs, incorporating props and costumes into the acts. Gretchen Letton, Valerie Emond, and Trisha Ruffley turned to their love of Spongebob Squarepants for their act, which included a rendition of the famous campfire song -- complete with a paper “campfire” to dance around.

There were also classics like The Bee Gees' Stayin Alive, featuring Sierra Arruda and Adianna Andrade dressed in disco attire, and two renditions of Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

The lip sync competition has been a tradition at the school for 30 years. It’s all about sending off the fifth grade class, noted Assistant Principal Richard Porter.
