Son of Afghanistan vice president to speak at university

Jan 29, 2018

A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth professor and the son of current Afghani Vice President General Dostum will host a discussion about the film "12 Strong" on January 30, 7 p.m. at the Claire T. Carney Library

General Dostum's son Batur Dostum will lead the discussion, titled "The Real Life Story behind 12 Strong." It will cover the portrayal of Dostum's father and the war on the Taliban. A presentation by Dr. Williams will follow. Dr. Williams spent two summers living with General Dostum in the plains of northern Afghanistan and has been an advisor to the U.S. Army and CIA.

Dr. Williams authored The Last Warlord, a book about anti-Taliban warlord Dostum and his horse warriors. He was a key adviser to Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and actors Chris Hemsworth (who plays Green Beret Captain Mark Nutsch) and Navid Negahban (General Dostum) as they told the story of 12 Green Beret soldiers who teamed with Dostum to fight the Taliban in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The event is free to attend and is open to the public. Visit umassd.edu for more information.
