A New Bedford travel agent accused of stealing more than $40,000 from customers across southeastern Massachusetts pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court to charges of larceny, the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office announced on October 4.

Lucy Pimental, a former travel agent, pleaded guilty to nine counts of larceny over $250 and one count of larceny over $250 of a person over 60 years old in connection with her scheme. Prosecutors allege that after losing her job as a travel agent in the New Bedford area, she began stealing from her clients by accepting their money and failing to provide promised travel arrangements.

In one case, outlined in a press release from the District Attorney’s Office, she stole more than $13,000 from a Dartmouth resident who was also her doctor. In that case, the victim paid for a Disney cruise for two adults and five children. Pimental told the victim that although she was no longer employed, she could still get the victim discounted rates on the cruise.

The victim, however, noticed that the trip had never been booked, and after numerous attempts to contact Pimental, she said that her phone fell in the toilet and that she had re-booked the trip, and provided the victim with what turned out to be a fake JetBlue receipt.

Several other victims came forward with similar accusations, including one from Freetown, one from Taunton, and one from New Bedford.

When Pimental was arrested in 2015, she denied any wrongdoing. Although she admitted she owed some of her clients money, she claimed she was in contact with “Jennifer from New Jersey” to book the vacations she had promised, but was unable to provide officials with a last name for Jennifer or her contact information.

“This was an egregious breach of trust by the defendant who even defrauded her own doctor,” District Attorney Tom Quinn said in a press release. “I hope the defendant has the same enthusiasm for paying back restitution that she did for stealing and defrauding long-time friends, doctors and clients who put their trust in her.”
